Video Clips of Medicinal Plants


An ongoing project of mine is collecting short videos of medicinal plants in the field. I use them for teaching purposes and will make a couple of DVDs out of them eventually. I took most of them (Warning: I suffer from Restless Camera Syndrome), and Donna Chesner took a few. Some are filmed in our garden. These files are all .mov, and need a quicktime plugin for your browser. I have removed the original 38 I put up in 2002; more advanced compression and codecs make it possible to reduce the original videos to cleaner and smaller 240 X 180 files. I will add more as possible. Many of you now have broadband...I on the other hand, living in rural Arizona, still have a 28 gerbil modem connection, so I will put them up gradually.

This plant is the adulterant that makes up 99% of the world's "Arnica montana", actually a European mountain wildflower, with useful relatives in the North American high mountains. Heterotheca is frequently a sunbelt urban weed in Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso and Los Angeles. Although useful, it has little in common with true Arnica... except yellow flowers.

The swollen stem of this peculiar goard is typical, the market in Mexico is substantial, overharvesting likely, as the adult plant can be seen from long distances as the stem reflects late afternoon light while looking eastward.
